DIVISION OF TURBINES AND COMPRESSORS |
The Division of Turbines and Compressors deals basically
with investigations in the field of aerodynamics and design
of turbomachines: steam and gas turbines, compressors,
blowers and fans. The second fundamental field of interest
are new systems for energy conversion, especially hybrid
systems based on renewable energy resources.
At present a project devoted to a power plant for the
Uniejów district, based on geothermal energy coupled with a
biomass burning process (a steam boiler fuelled with straw),
is conducted. Simultaneously, some projects on ORCs (Organic
Rankine Cycles) and turbines adapted to them are carried
out.
The issues of optimization of control systems and unsteady
operation (surge) of radial compressors are another field
under investigation.
Within the direct cooperation with the industry, the
Division of Turbines and Compressors (together with other
divisions at the Institute of Turbomachinery) deals with the
following activities:
· modernizations of turbomachines (the so-called ”revamps”).
Lately, several revamps of process compressors have been
carried out. All the design works, starting from a concept,
through thermodynamic and flow calculations, a technical
project of the blading system, up to acceptance tests;
·
post-failure and performance expertise in turbomachines and
installations related;
·
technical projects of low-power turbines and blowers for
special technological applications (e.g., for
high-temperature gas quenching);
· model investigations of flow devices and system
(electrofilters, various types of valves: saturation valves,
control flap valves).
The Division of Turbines and Compressors employs the
following test stands (within ClabME – Central Laboratory of
Power Generation Machines):
·
TM1 double-shaft air turbine test stand;
·
1.I1.76 compressor test stand;
·
DP 1 radial blower test stand.
During the design works and analyses, the Division of
Turbines and Compressors applies the following own codes:
·
code for calculations of blading in radial turbine stages,
·
code for calculations of compressor stages,
·
code for calculations of fan stages and their characteristic
curves.
Moreover, CFD (ANSYS CFX) software packages in their
student, academic and commercial versions are employed.
