The Institute of Turbomachinery has been established in 1970 when three different units of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering have been combined:
- The Department of Thermal Flow Machines, lead by prof. dr. engr. Władyslaw Gundlach
- The Department of Pumps and Water Motors, lead by prof. dr. engr. Stanisław Kuczewski
- The Department of Fluid Mechanics, lead by prof. dr. engr. Zdzisław Orzechowski
The Institute set out on the 1st of September 1970, with prof. dr. engr. Gundlach as its first director. Professor kept that leadership role until his retirement 21 years later.
For the following 16 years, since the 1st of October 1991, the director of the Institute was prof. dr. engr. Jan Krysiński.
Then, since the 1st of October 2007, the third and current director is prof. dr. hab. engr. Krzysztof Jóźwik, the Rector of the Lodz University of Technology.
On the 1st of November 2012, Institute of Turbomachinery contained six Scientific Facilities: Water Machines and Fluid Mechanics, Turbines and Compressors, Medical Equipment, Flow Machines Diagnostics and Automation, Fluid Metrology and Heat Engineering and Refrigeration.
Institute activity can be divided into three fields: didactics, on three levels of academic studies (engineer, master and doctor’s degree), scientific research and cooperation with different companies, to perform research and commissions.
Employees of the Institute conduct lectures and seminaries for the students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, mostly for those who are a part of Energetics study program, but also for the students of various other Faculties and Departments of the whole University, such as those studying basic metrology, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat exchange, energy generation and medical equipment. Students can also join rapidly developing student groups that operate at the Institute: Lodz Solar Team, Iron Warriors and GUST.
Scientific Research performer by us is mainly oriented around the energy generating machinery and renewable energy sources. We are also interested in diagnostics and dynamics of machines. Many of our studies are applicable in the industry and is financed by The National Centre for Research and Development and European Commission.
Our cooperation with various companies includes research commissions, forensic evaluations, projects and designs, and includes both domestic and foreign companies. We offer diagnostics of machines and devices, that measures how exploited, effective, optimized and reliable they are. We design and construct new devices (including, but not only, the flow machines), and use restorative design techniques to improve the effectiveness and capacity of devices, predominantly compressors. We also conduct studies on the internal and external flow. We already cooperated with such companies as: Airbus Helicopters, Pankl Turbosystems GmbH, BSH Household Appliances Sp. z o.o., PKN Orlen S.A., ANWIL S.A., Seco/Warwick S.A., EuRoPol GAZ S.A., and Rossmann Łódź among others. Our motto is “Quick and very efficient”.
