Between 1 and 5 June 2026, staff members of the Institute of Turbomachinery at Lodz University of Technology, Dr Eng. Anna Karczemska and Dr Eng. Dariusz Witkowski, carried out two mobilities to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB): one within the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility programme and the other within the NAWA Research Mobility Fund, implemented under the cooperation project between Lodz University of Technology and the ECIU network.

The visit continued the collaboration between the Institute of Turbomachinery and the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB), which specialises in biotechnology, biomedicine and molecular research. The programme was expanded to include meetings at the Barcelona Institute of Materials Science (ICMAB), a leading centre in materials engineering and nanotechnology, and the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA), conducting research in food technology and bioproduction.

During the visit, a number of scientific and organisational topics related to the recently submitted HEART4KID project (Horizon Europe Pathfinder Open), focused on developing a pulsatile Pediatric Artificial Heart, were discussed. Consultations were held on antibacterial hydrogel coatings for implantable devices. Lectures and seminars were also delivered for students, doctoral candidates and staff of UAB, titled “Allotropic forms of carbon – from physics and materials science to applications in biomedical engineering” and “Diamonds from the sky”. In addition, information meetings on the Erasmus+ programme at Lodz University of Technology were organised to support the development of future mobilities.

The mobility resulted in the full achievement of its objectives, broadened the scope of cooperation with partners in Barcelona and outlined directions for further educational and scientific activities. The visit confirmed the high value of collaboration between Lodz University of Technology and Barcelona’s research institutions and set the stage for subsequent joint initiatives, creating a solid foundation for future projects and international mobilities.
