LIDER is a program established in 2009 and coordinated by The National Centre for Research and Development. It aims to increase the abilities of its attendees, in the fields of self-planning, managing and leading a research team, through both: the support of research and development projects that have the best practical use and potential for implementation; and the support of Polish universities that represent the most talented researchers and scientists. Program is aimed at young scientists, to whom it offers not only a large amount of funds to finance their projects (a sum of funds spend on the winning project equals 70 million PLN) but also a chance to plan and complete a research project from start to finish, including its promotion, organization and management of the chosen team.

In the XIV edition of LIDER there had been 360 applicants, from which 41 laureates were chosen, including dr inż. Zbigniew Tyfa, the sole representative of our Łódź University of Technology and an employee of the Institute of Turbomachinery.

As a part of his project “Mathematical predictions of the effects of the treatment of intracranial aneurysms” dr inż. Tyfa, with his research team, are working on an interactive computer program called MAPIATO, which is set to aid doctors, especially neurosurgeons, in choosing the most optimal technique of securing a brain aneurysm, in the case of each specific patient. The results are generated by a neural network (trained using tens of thousands of data from CFD analysis of a blood flow in a geometry before and after a virtual operation of securing a brain aneurysm) and will allow the doctors to quickly and non-invasively compare the outcomes of different methods of aneurysm treatment. Thus, the doctor will be able to choose objectively the best method of treatment for each patient. MAPIATO application will take the data on the morphometric parameters of the patient’s aneurysm and the considered treatment, and through the neural network will give a set of information on the changes in hemodynamics of the blood flow inside the aneurysm.

The total grant received for this project is 1 795 674,50 PLN.

Congratulations to dr inż. Tyfa for this success and we wish you further triumphs in your project’s development.
